Applications Are Open: Visa Africa Fintech Accelerator 2026 (Cohort 6) Is Your Startup’s Next Big Move

If you’re building a fintech startup in Africa, this is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. Visa has officially opened applications for Cohort 6 of the Visa Africa Fintech Accelerator — one of the continent’s most prestigious startup acceleration programs — with a deadline of May 17, 2026.

The announcement came during the Cohort 5 Demo Day at GITEX Africa in Marrakech, where Visa also celebrated a landmark milestone: the program has now supported over 100 fintech startups across Africa since its launch. With a combined valuation of $1.4 billion across all participating companies, the numbers speak for themselves.

What Is the Visa Africa Fintech Accelerator?

The Visa Africa Fintech Accelerator is an intensive, three-month program designed to help early-stage and growth-stage fintech startups across the African continent scale their businesses, strengthen their products, and tap into Visa’s global network of partners, investors, and industry leaders.

Since its launch, the program has backed 104 startups across five cohorts, representing a combined valuation of $1.4 billion. It has grown into one of the most impactful accelerators on the continent — not just for the resources it provides, but for the collaborative ecosystem it has built around its alumni.

What’s in It for Your Startup?

Participation in the Visa Africa Fintech Accelerator is entirely free of charge. Here’s what accepted startups receive:

Structured Learning Program
The three-month hybrid accelerator includes a comprehensive onboarding week followed by ten thematic learning weeks. Topics cover product development, technology, marketing, sales, finance, and investor readiness — everything a scaling fintech needs.

1-on-1 Mentorship
Accepted founders get direct, personalized mentorship sessions with Visa executives and industry leaders who have hands-on experience scaling fintech businesses. Real advice. Real impact.

Access to Visa’s Tech Stack
Participants get hands-on technical support and access to Visa’s Developer tools, APIs, and fintech-specific training modules — giving startups the infrastructure to build smarter and faster.

Investment Opportunities
At Demo Day, startups pitch to a curated audience of investors, corporate partners, and industry stakeholders. Up to 50% of each cohort could receive investment consideration from either Visa or Plug and Play. Regional and global venture capital investors also attend Demo Day, creating additional funding pathways.

Global Network Access
One of the program’s most valuable assets is access to Visa’s global network — opening doors to commercial partnerships, market expansion opportunities, and collaborations with industry giants.

$200,000+ Perks Package
Participants receive access to a perks package valued at over $200,000, including software tools, infrastructure credits, and professional services discounts from more than 100 vendors.

Demo Day Accommodation
Visa covers accommodation for one founder per startup to attend Demo Day in person.

Who Should Apply?

The program is designed for fintech startups that are:

  • Legally registered in Africa or with a strong commitment to expand into African markets
  • Post-MVP — you need a working product, not just an idea
  • Seed to Series A stage — early-growth startups with existing traction
  • Building in the fintech space, across any of the following focus areas:

✅ Unlocking New Payment Flows
✅ Embedded Finance
✅ Empowering Merchants & SMEs
✅ Payment Infrastructure Enablement
✅ Open Banking & Future of Finance Technologies
✅ Sustainable & Inclusive Finance

The program is open to startups across the continent, with previous cohorts drawing participants from countries including Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Ghana, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and more.

What the Selection Process Looks Like

Applications go through two rounds:

Round 1: Applications are reviewed for program alignment, traction, team strength, and strategic synergies with Visa.

Round 2: Shortlisted startups participate in virtual interviews. Finalists are notified ahead of the program kickoff.

Note: The program is conducted primarily in English, and interviews will be exclusively in English.

The Impact So Far: Why This Program Matters

The numbers from the first five cohorts paint a compelling picture of what this program delivers:

  • 104 startups supported across five cohorts
  • $1.4 billion combined valuation of participating companies
  • 28 markets covered by the most recent Cohort 5 startups alone
  • 10 African countries represented at the Cohort 5 Demo Day

But beyond the headline figures, the program is creating something more durable: an ecosystem of collaborating alumni. Recent examples include Zazu (Cohort 4) partnering with Chari (Cohort 1) to launch a neobank for SMEs in Morocco, and Credable (Cohort 3) teaming up with Onafriq to develop scalable digital credit solutions across East and Southern Africa.

As Godfrey Sullivan, Senior Vice President and Head of Product and Solutions for CEMEA at Visa, put it: “What makes Africa’s fintech story so powerful is the growing spirit of partnership across founders, enablers, and industry leaders.”
